there were lights inside your eyes

remember when you were young and i was pretty?
you breathed sonnets and i was a poem in free verse
we cupped tendrils of hope with the palms of our hands,
caught facets of moonlight against the surface of our skin,
and i knew there were universes within us.
we made pools of sleep with the tips of our fingers,
dissolved the world in hushed murmurs,
drowned ourselves in dusk's hidden volumes,

and there were lights inside your eyes.

remember when my skin was peeling like solar flares?
you held me gently beneath the red oak tree,
on that moss-covered log
we were trembling,
we were vulnerable
but with all the youthfulness in the world,
i fell in love with you,
with the worlds in you,
with all of you.
